Extend Your Summer. Escape to Latin America
Where should you go if you want to read a book at the beach and your significant other wants to surf – or the other way around? What's that place where you can you enjoy an ice-cold margarita while watching sloths do their thing? Where can you spend your days doing yoga by day and dancing salsa all night? Latin America has all the answers! Here, we've compiled a list of stylish boutique hotels in Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama that await you for your next holiday. Who actually says you can’t have it all?
Starting off with the most southern country of Central America and famous for its canal: Panama! About 100km from the busy capital, on the Caribbean side of the country, lays the small town Portobelo. This is where the private retreat El otro lado is located – in the middle of the Portobelo National Park, which happens to be a UNESCO World Heritage site. This translates to the perfect stay for lovers of nature and outdoor activities – for the modern traveler who doesn’t want to miss out on all the advantages of modern life. The retreat offers different types of houses to choose from, too. Do you fancy a private property, a rainforest next door or an infinity pool? No hay ningún problema!
Just to the north is Costa Rica. Did you know that 25 percent of the country’s total landmass is labeled as protected area? Here, the protection of nature and sustainability is taken very seriously. And now, you can support their approach by visiting one of the numerous National Parks or private nature reserves. To get the most out of your stay, you could stay in the secluded eco resort Luna Lodge, which is located next to the National Park Corcovado on the Osa Peninsula.
The bungalows of the lodge are in the middle of the tropical rainforest of Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast. Wildlife fans listen up, this is one of the most bio-diverse spots on the planet! But you can of course spend your time doing yoga, getting treatments at Luna Spa or hiking. For a couple's vacation, it also comes in quite handy that the Osa Peninsula is voted 4th most romantic places of the world my National Geographic in 2017…
If you prefer the beach over the rainforest, the Latitude 10 resort just outside of the small town Santa Teresa might light your eyes up. The resort offers an exclusive collection of five little casitas, hidden in the jungle – this is some serious privacy. The nearby Santa Teresa is a one of Costa Rica’s most popular beaches and a classic surfer’s paradise with a consistent swell throughout the year. This makes Latitude 10 the perfect stay for everybody who is looking for a calm resort, but also likes who likes to go out at night to mingle with other travelers. Pura Vida!
Next up on this list is Mexico. Not far away from the American stronghold of Cancun lays the laid-back and stylish Tulum. Along the white sand coastline there's plenty to discover: Mayan ruins, numerous cenotes, and of course, the legitimate famous Mexican food. And yes, the Mexican cuisine is so much more than Nachos and Burritos!
While there, give the traditional Mexican dishes from Yucatan at the eco-friendly and art inspired Casa Malca, a try. And you might as well book a stay, because the spacious beachfront villa is the ultimate spot if you’re looking for both luxury and privacy. What makes the villa special is not only the surrounding natural wonder, but also the tasteful contemporary art from the proprietor’s very own collection.
Not far from Casa Malca you'll find the Papaya Playa Project, our favorite. A place where sustainability and social responsibility trump all else – they've leveraged those elements to create a breathtaking property. By 2018, the project wants to achieve their goal of zero emissions and zero contamination. Their goal for ultimate sustainability does not inherently exclude luxury or a sophisticated style, but you'll feel it nonetheless. The facilities on site are build based on the principals of the traditional Mayan way; and of course, local materials are used. Think global, act local!
This is also true for the food served in their restaurant where you can try a variety of dishes unique to this region. Papaya Playa Project is the perfect fit for you if you like the Caribbean, enjoy a spa treatment, connecting body and mind in a yoga session or if you are looking for a spiritual session in a Temazcal. Oh, and have you ever been at a Full Moon party?
Last, but not least, another pearl of the Pacific Ocean, Hotel Escondido. In spanish, escondido mens hidden – and it's a good description for the private hotel. Located about 20km outside of the surfers paradise, Puerto Escondido is quite and has great waves (compared to the 30-foot swells you'll find at nearby Zicatela beach).
The hotel offers a total of 16 stylish palapa bungalows with private pools. Of course, all of them are equipped with a mandatory hammock on their terrace! Do you have something special to celebrate? If so, head to part at the hotels underground bar! And if you still feel like leaving your hotel – which you should, because there hotel is surrounded by incredible nature – you should visit the impressive artist residency Casa Wabi, which is right next door. For all design and architecture lovers: Casa Wabi was designed by Japanese architect Tadao Ando!
